I've had a productive morning, so I am rewarding myself by writing this. Yay, me!
So one miss Brittany asked me down below who my favorite group is in the Sing-Off...and I thought, why not just do a big ol' post on all my thoughts and feelings regarding this faboo show?!
Maybe not all. That is excessive. Moving forward.
So obvis, or maybe not so obvis, I have a soft spot for the groups founded in academia, aka, the high school and college groups. Having sang a cappella in high school and college, and having learned from age 14 on that I melt like a Popsicle in July (shanks, Darla!) when confronted with the all male groups out there, it's hard for me to care as much about the grownup groups. When the show premiered, I was pumped for the Whiffenpoofs, Pitch Slapped, Eleventh Hour, On the Rocks, et al. I was even somewhat supportive of Back Beats, as they are all old collegiate singers and some had even been on the show in the previous season. (Negative points, however, for forming specifically to win the money and recording contract, and not for the love of singing.)
So far I have felt that all the decisions by the judges have been justified. Some groups tend to come ready to go, and everyone who has gone, in my opinion, hasn't done so. Does that mean I am ok with the Poofs being gone? Heck no!! I wanted them to win it all after that first episode stunner of "Grace Kelly". Did I think Men of Note kind of blew it big time? Absolutely! I had high hopes. NOTE. b, you should probs stop here if you haven't watched yet. Do I want Groove for Thought to have another chance? Not really. I was not into their inability to do anything with a song but "jazz it up", and I was particularly unhappy with their destruction of some classic Hall and Oates (by the way, that link? The absolute epitome of what that song means and feels like. GREAT job, Joseph Gordon Levitt) OK, b, you can come back now.
I was all set to dislike Street Corner Symphony, but after their performance last night, I am rethinking my position. Jerry Lawson and Talk of the Town? I don't think you'll make it to the end, and while you're cute, I'd rather the youngins have their chance in the sun. On The Rocks, I adore how hilarious you are, quite reminiscent of the Bubs last season-but please, don't let your musicality suffer too much in the name of laughs and entertainment value. Backbeats, thanks for letting someone else besides homegirl have a chance, even if homegirl is a ballin soloist. Committed-oh, Committed. You guys have the chance to just own this show and go above and beyond. I could see this season coming down to you and SCS. I was so unhappy with your choice of rock song last night, because I felt you cheated just a wee bit, but at the same time, you give me goosebumps, like only the Whiffenpoofs had so far.
Finally...the judges. Ben and Shawn, I love you both. You have experience with this music, you understand it, you can critique it, you make interesting observations that the average listener might not pick up. Great choices. Nicole...you can go away. What is your purpose? To bring "star power" to the panel? You're compliments consist of talking about how cute the boys are and how much you love the girls' power, and any kind of critique is a piggy back off of Ben or Shawn. Just stop. Nick Lachey, you aren't a judge, but I'm in. you're an adorable host. Dig it.
After all that, if I have to return to the original question, who is my favorite on this show right now? I would have to say On The Rocks. I am too in love with that dorky, funny, all-male group attitude they have going on. I'm a sucker. You can miss some notes and putz around a little if you can capture my heart. I'm ok with it.
