If you do not know, The Sing Off is NBC's answer to Glee/American Idol-a short (like 4 episodes in one week short) competition between 8 different A Cappella groups from around the countries. They are in it to win $100,000 and a recording contract with Sony Records. Sweet.
I was pumped for this show. NBC wouldn't let Glee in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade because of this show. A Cappella music is a light of my life and it was being SHOWCASED in this show.
And then I watched it.
So First Bummer-The 8 groups have already been chosen (you don't get to see any of the selection process) and the decisions of the first 5 cuts is made by the 3 judges, Ben Folds (good choice), Shawn Stockman (from boys2men- I get it), and Nicole Scherzinger (from the Pussycat Dolls-WHAT. THE. HECK.). Ben and Shawn, throughout the show, gave some really good constructive feedback. Nicole? Has she heard A Cappella music before this? She is the Paula Abdul of this judging crew. Makes no significant contribution to the show. As CWF texted me, "Who let her talk?"
Second Bummer- I was not very impressed with some of these groups. Seriously. I was so ready for that jazzed up excitable energy that I have come to associate with A Cappella music. You don't have the band backing you up, it is all you and your voice, give me a show! I came into watching this show knowing already that my favorite group was going to be Tufts University's Beelzebubs, and they gave me what I was longing for. A high energy, fun, and well sang performance. Maybe I am limiting my expectations, but with 4 of the 8 groups being collegiate groups/specifically all alumni of a collegiate group (note: those four are still in it!), this energy and quality was what I was expecting. The Bub's were the only ones who delivered, and it really sold them and will make them a fan favorite.
I will say this-all 6 groups remaining sold me on tomorrow night's episode. Check out these two clips of two of the best (and the two remaining all male) groups' performances for tomorrow night:

Long day ahead tomorrow- 9 1/2 hours at the preschool followed by my second night of boxing! Hope everyone had a wonderful Monday!
