Que What? Is....

...When you find out you are not on your sorority alumnae mailing list when you just graduated this past May. Hello, people! I should be one of the easier alums to remember. And I know I graduated in good standing, I got my stole!!

So of course, as a freshly (4 months is fresh, right?) graduated graduate from college, I am bound to miss some things and not others. So I thought I might compile a mini list of things I can think of (right now) that I miss and do not miss the most.

Things I miss:
My Sorority
My "new member" class, my exec position, my family, and my seniors. Doing cheers, singing during rush, Bid Day! Tunneling for boys Bid Day, cocktails, formals, wearing my letters on Fridays, rituals...the list goes on and on.

Sleeping In
I was one of those lazy bums who planned their schedules around sleep. Class at 7 at night? no problem, as long as my first class of the day isn't until 2!

Relaxing
Hanging out on the porch or the lawn of our sorority house, spending hours in the Cavern or the Dining Hall, sitting outside of the admin building...

Club Fintel
Every year during finals week our library would turn 24/7. They would have candy and hot chocolate and coffee. Everyone would be there, finding a place to study or a computer was impossible, but there was always someone to go on a Sheetz run with you, even if you lost your primo (read: anywhere in the three parking lots nearby) parking spot.

Bobs
The bar of choice for the college students, which was also my place of work. G&T's, blow job shots, and Green Dinosaurs, oh my! I met so many great people working and playing there. I also miss their steak subs, their boston zones, their salem salads...oof.

Friends
Like I was always told I would, I met some of my best friends in college, and I honestly cannot picture my life without them. There are so many times that I would want to relive just to be with them and laugh with them.

Location
I spent four years at my college, and the last two years I spent living and working down there practically all year round (I went home for Christmas, Fall Break, and Spring Break). Its a gorgeous place, an awesome small town, and while I thought I would want a nice long break, I want to go back.

Things I do not miss:
Dorms
As much fun as they are (living surrounded by tons of people!) People coming into your room drunk while you're asleep, shower shoes, burnt popcorn, horrible roommates...I am just glad to have my own toilet again, thanks.

Class/Homework
This one...well, on some levels I do miss it, but overall, I have to go with not so much. Some professors I hated, some classes I just couldn't understand no matter how hard I tried (rereading a book three times and still not understanding a word? not ok) so while there are the professors I loved and the classes I loved to participate and excel in, the others...kill me

Drama
High School called...I think no matter where you go, you will always get drama, and that might be the thing I will not miss the most. I don't mind the drama itself, but when people try and convince you to "not talk about each other" and "confront the person you have a problem with" all I could ever think was "hello, its not just here. you will run into this problem once you leave college. The work place, within your friends, within your families...Just get through the storm people!" Plus hi, being in a sorority not only means drama within the 60-some girls, but means being part of Greek Life overall, which means you deal with things like dirty rushing, and rumors and feuds and other sororities stealing your sweeties...what? Drama? Bring it on.

Bobs
This one is on both lists. I loved that place, but man did I hate it with a fiery passion. The amount of times I died on my feet in there? Especially Alumni Weekend. When you are there until 4 in the morning after working the Friday night of Alumni Weekend when getting to the bar to pick up drinks to be delivered is quite possibly the most frustrating thing I have ever done. Sometimes waitressing ain't so great people. And for all those who wonder "how hard is it to do your job?!" let me just say, it is. As a college educated woman, It. Is. Hard.

Parking
Oh lord. The worst thing I have ever dealt with. Trying to find parking on a college campus is probably the worst. Especially when you go to park outside your dorm, but that parking lot is the central parking lots for all commuters.

Freshmen
OK. Heres the thing. I know we were all freshmen at one point, and it just comes with the territory of being a freshmen. But oh, my gosh. When you go to a party and 75% of the people there are freshmen. When they don't know what they're doing in the dining hall. When all you want to do is kick them in the teeth. You just have to think to yourself "this was once me." And then turn to your friend and say, "I f*ing hate freshmen."

So there you have my mini list. Some people may agree, some may not, some may think of things I missed. College is one of the best and worst times of your life. As the unofficial motto goes, "We're not here for a long time, We're here for a good time."

  1. Sheetz, so good! I've only tried it once like a year ago in VA, I wish they had them down here! Parking killed me, I am still getting emails about tickets and I graduated in Spring 08! haha
